The holidays give plenty of opportunities for sugary treats. While these can be fun every once in awhile, it also makes it absolutely vital to keep up on the basics of oral hygiene.
Brush: The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each time. Use tooth-wide, back-and-forth strokes, using a toothbrush that has very soft bristles. Both standard and electric toothbrushes work well. Brushing your teeth is the foundation of good oral hygiene. Make sure to not skip any sessions!
If you have a hard time making time for your teeth, set a timer for the full two minutes. Or, you can switch to an electric toothbrush with a timer built-in!
You can brush with your partner for some one-on-one time, which can be fun. Or, make it a family tradition to brush teeth together! Brushing with kids helps develop excellent oral hygiene habits to last a lifetime.
Floss: Flossing cleans plaque and debris away from difficult-to-reach places. Though it can be difficult to adjust to, flossing is vital for dental hygiene. This is true even for very small children–flossing should start as soon as a child has 2 teeth that touch! The habit should continue throughout your life. Floss once a day, for 2-3 minutes each session.
Mouthwash: Some people decide to add a mouthwash to their daily dental routine. If you choose to do so, buy a mouthwash that has the ADA Seal of Acceptance label on the packaging. If you choose to avoid alcohol for any reason, read labels carefully–many mouthwashes have very high alcohol content. Children under 6 should never use mouthwash.
