Not everyone is comfortable seeing the dentist. Some people may feel mild anxiety about seeing the dentist, while other people experience full-blown fear. This can result from past negative dental experiences, or just feeling uncomfortable sitting in the chair, or a fear of pain.
If you have a tendency to avoid the dentist because of fear or anxiety, you should talk to our dentist, Dr. Neal Vavra and Dr. Ricky Chung. If pain is an issue for you, let the dentist know. There are steps we can take to make sure that you don’t feel any pain during your visit. You can also arrange for a signal that you can give to the dentist and the team if your anxiety kicks in during your appointment, and you need a break for a few minutes. You may be able to bring your phone or MP3 player with you to the appointment to help distract you while you are in the chair. Another effective way to relieve anxiety at the dentist office is through the use of nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide, which is commonly called laughing gas, is delivered through a mask placed over the nose. It will leave you feeling relaxed, but you will remain conscious and will be able to communicate with the dentist if you need to do so. The effects wear off quickly after the gas is removed.
