A cavity or other large area of tooth decay can seriously compromise the health of a tooth. In time, the decay can penetrate the pulp and root of the tooth leading to a serious infection. This could even cause the total loss of the tooth.

In a case like this Dr. Neal Vavra and Dr. Ricky Chung will often recommend extracting any remnants of the root of the tooth and then installing a bridge. This replacement tooth, fused with a crown on each end, will effectively restore the full function and appearance of the tooth.

The first step in the process involves Dr. Neal Vavra and Dr. Ricky Chung forming abutments out of the two closest teeth. This is done by removing all of the tooth enamel. Then, he will form an impression of the abutments as well as the void and your personal bite pattern. This will be sent to our dental lab where your new bridge is made.

Dr. Neal Vavra and Dr. Ricky Chung will then secure a hard plastic temporary crown over each abutment to protect it while the lab is busy producing your final bridge. We will call you to schedule a brief second appointment when your bridge is ready. The temporary crowns will then be removed and your new bridge cemented in place.
